I thought so too. I have several sizes for each and every of my photos. But for some reason WordPress is serving the 768px thumbnails for mobile… and serving the appropiate size for desktop :/

gtmetric reports that i am not always serving scaled images.

how exactly can i ensure that tens of thousands of iamges already in pages are all correclty served on PC/mobile.?

I thought it was automatic

You can check what are the exact image sizes for both containers, and create 2 separate images, and then upload them separately for both containers, so they would fit properly
