Every consumer loves to have multiple options to choose from. As an online store owner, you are probably wondering how to create these options for your customers. WooCommerce, a WordPress e-Commerce plugin, makes this possible using the WooCommerce variable product feature.

The plugin has a feature that lets you add variations to your product. For example, you can put 5 colors (or sizes) of a shoe on display for your customers. Using this feature could be a bit tricky at first. Nonetheless, it becomes easy to use with time.

From this article, you’ll get an in-depth understanding of what WooCommerce variable product means. You’ll also learn how to set it up yourself. Let’s get started.

WooCommerce Variable Product

By default, WooCommerce allows you to add seven (7) types of products. They include:

  • Simple products: These are physical products that require shipping. Examples of products in this category are books, shoes, etc.
  • Grouped products: As the name implies, they are a group of simple products. E.g. a set of 10 fancy cups.
  • Virtual products: These kinds of products are not shipped. A typical example is a service.
  • Downloadable: This could be an electronic product like an e-book or a WordPress plugin.
  • Affiliate products: These kinds of products are sold on a different site. You only list them on yours.
  • Variable products: This is a product with variations. Every individual product variation has its own image, price, SKU, etc.

Variable products, being our focus, have dropdowns on them. They allow customers to select options they prefer (maybe the black phone or the white one) through the dropdowns. Typically, they are used for any item that comes in different colors and sizes. Items like shirts, shoes, bags, phones, etc. 

How to add a variable product in WooCommerce

We’ll walk you through a step by step process of adding a variable product in WordPress. Of course, you need to install and set up WooCommerce on your WP site. So, let’s begin.

Stage 1: Create Global Attributes

You can’t create a variable product without first adding an attribute. This is because attributes define product variations. For instance, a T-shirt’s size could either be small, medium or large. ‘Size’ is the Attribute, while ‘small’, ‘medium’, and ‘large’ are the product variations. I hope you got that.

Now, there are two types of attributes in WooCommerceGlobal Product Attributes and Custom Product Attributes. Global product attributes can be applied to multiple products in your store. For instance, your T-shirt store can have ‘size and color’ as global attributes. Reason being that all your T-shirts will have ‘sizes and colors’ as attributes. So, you don’t have to keep adding the same attributes. That would be quite hectic.

On the other hand, custom product attributes are specific to one product only. When you create this kind of attribute for a product, you can’t apply it to another.

2. Enter the name of the attribute e.g size (the way you want it to appear at the front-end).

3. Click Add attribute at the end of the page. Your newly created attribute will appear on the right side of your screen.

4. Give values to your attribute by clicking Configure terms. Enter the attribute values e.g. small, large, medium. Keep adding values until you are done.

Yeah! We have successfully created Global Product Attributes. We can apply the attributes to any variation we create afterward. Let’s get down to the next step.

Stage 2: Create A Product & Set the Product Type

As we discussed earlier, WooCommerce has other product types apart from variable products. We need to set the product type to ‘variable products’. To do this, Go to Products >> Add products or ‘edit’ an existing one. Scroll down to the product datamenu and select ‘variable product’.

That’s it for this step.

Stage 3: Add Attributes to your variable product

Still in the product data section. Click ‘Attributes’.

Select any of the attributes we previously created (in the ‘Custom product attribute’ dropdown, ). Click ‘Add’.

Fill in the values of the selected attribute (in this case, we have small, medium, and large). Since we already created the values in stage 1, you don’t need to type them. You’ll get suggestions to choose from.

Tick the ‘used for variation’ box.

Note: If instead of global, you wanted to use custom product attributes, leave the dropdown set to ‘Custom product attribute’ and click Add. Enter the name of the custom attribute you wish to add (let’s say ‘color’). Then add the values (e.g. blue, red, black and white) in the field provided. Also, remember to tick the ‘Used for variations’ box.

When you are done with either method, click Save attributes, and you’re done.

Quick Tip: Displaying your variable products as image swatches or color swatches may be more appealing to your customers. You can achieve this with the aid of WooCommerce plugins.   • Text and radio buttons.

Stage 4: Manage variations – WooCommerce variable product

For every product variation, there is a unique set of attributes. Does that make any sense to you? Ok, let’s break it down. A T-shirt can be:

  • Small and black (one variation)
  • Large and black (another variation)
  • Medium and black
  • Small and white
  • Large and white etc.

The list could go on and on.

At this stage, we have to set the cost, image, specs of each variation. To do this, click Variations (in the products data section). Select ‘Add variation’ in the dropdown and click Go.

Upload the product image by clicking the image icon. Next, fill in the SKU, regular price, sale price, weight, stock status (in stock or out of stock), and dimensions for the product variation.

To add another variation, click Go again. Repeat the process until you have entered all variations. When you are done, click Save changes.

At this point, your customers will have a range of product options to choose from using WooCommerce variations. They don’t have to move from one product page to the other seeking the color and size they prefer.

How To Setup PayPal on Woocommerce - Complete Guide

WooCommerce PayPal checkout makes it easy for you, as a business owner, to receive payments from your customers, regardless of their location. If you run an eCommerce store, you need a means of accepting money from customers. While there are many options you could choose from, Paypal is often one of the top choices. Why? Most online shoppers use PayPal and have become used to the PayPal payment process. On your end, receiving payments through this platform is a seamless and secure process. In this article, you will learn about the Woocommerce PayPal setup. But first, we will need to create a PayPal sandbox.

How to create a PayPal Sandbox Account

Before deploying a PayPal payment gateway to your Woocommerce site, it’s needful to first test it to be sure everything works fine. Thankfully PayPal has an option for this: PayPal sandbox. So, in this tutorial, we shall create a sandbox account. We’ll be using it along the way.

Head over to PayPal’s developer section. On the far right corner, click Log into Dashboard

Upon click, you would be prompted to sign in (if you already have an account) or sign up. In this instance, we will be signing up.

Next, select an account category: Personal or Business. Personal PayPal accounts are for those who just want to send and receive money. Since you would be doing business transactions, choose a business account.

Put in your email (personal or business email), set a password, and provide a descrip/tion of your business.

Once you are done, submit your entry. The next screen you would see is this:click continue to payments setup

To link PayPal to your bank account, get a debit card for your business, etc. click Continue to Payment Setup. You can do that later, but for now, let’s integrate PayPal with WooCommerce.

Installing PayPal for WooCommerce

If you don’t have WooCommerce up and running on your WordPress website, go ahead and install WooCommerce and activate it now. This is done in the same way as every other plugin is installed and activated.

With WooCommerce installed and activated, navigate to WooCommerce >> Settings

Next, click Payments.

Note: If you are using older versions of WooCommerce, you would see Checkout in place of Payments.

Scroll down to PayPal Standard, enable it by toggling the button to the left (usually disabled by default).

Next click Set Up. The next screen you would see is this:

Yes! we have successfully installed and activated Woocommerce. Also, we have enabled PayPal. Let’s dive deeper into the WooCommerce PayPal setup.

In the Title section, put in the headline you would want customers to see on landing on your PayPal checkout page. A good title would be something like this: “Pay with PayPal”.

As for the description, put in the text that would be below the headline. Remember the email you used for opening your business account? Put it in the “PayPal emailsection.

Since we are still in the testing phase, check Enable PayPal Sandbox. Also, check Enable logging to capture all PayPal events on your site. Now let’s set up PayPal.

If you prefer to receive alerts in an email different from the PayPal email, put it in the Receiver email.

PayPal identity token offers a secure means to verify payment from customers without using PayPal native’s IPN (Instant Payment Notification). Also, with the identity token, you can keep track of all transactions, either ongoing or completed.

To generate Identity Token, log into your PayPal business account and click on the settings icon.

Next, on the left side of the page, under the Products and Services section, click Website Payments.

After that, click update website preferences.

Next, turn on Auto return.

Finally, turn on Payment data transfer, put the URL to your “Thank you page”, and save. You will see your identity token displayed on the screen. Copy and paste this in the “Paypal identity token” input box in your Paypal plugin setup page.

Finishing up The Setup

In the Invoice prefix section, type in your preferred prefix for your invoices. Using unique invoice prefixes is particularly needful if you are running more than one online store. A unique prefix could be something like this: “Business Shop”. Put in your business name in place of “Business”.

If you check the Shipping details checkbox, shipping details would be sent to your PayPal address, not billing address.

To prevent the address from being changed, check the Address override.

As for Payment action, you have two options: capture or authorize. If you chose to capture, payments from customers would be processed immediately without the need for verification. If you go for authorizing, payments will first have to be verified before being processed. As you may have guessed, the authorize option is heavily time-consuming.

The rest (Page style and Image URL) are optional.

To process refunds, you will have to set up your API credentials. Head over to PayPal’s website to learn how to generate API credentials.

When you have your API details, input them and click Save changes.

To ensure the WooCommerce PayPal setup is working properly, we need to run a test purchase. This is where PayPal’s sandbox becomes handy.

How to Run a Test Purchase with PayPal Sandbox Account

First, ensure that Sandbox is enabled in the WooCommerce Setting (WooCommerce >> Settings>> Payments). Save changes.

If you haven’t created a developer account (same as sandbox account) yet, follow the steps in the first section of this article to do so. Now log into the developer account you just created, go to the ‘Sandbox’ section on the developer menu (on the left), and click Accounts. Next, click Create Account.

What you would see next is this:

The country you chose doesn’t really matter. Select a Personal Buyer account. Type in an email (this is the email you would be using for the test purchase). For this tutorial, we shall be using “fixrunner50@gmail.com”. Put in a password. You can fill in or leave out first and the last name.

In the payment section, type in any balance of your choice, select PayPal as Payment Card. Then click Create Account.

In your Sandbox dashboard, you should see the newly created account.

Now we’ve created a test buyer account to help us test our PayPal setup.

Testing our Buyer Account

Head over to your online store and make a purchase. As usual, add a product to the cart and proceed to checkout.

On the checkout page, fill in your normal billing details. Scroll down and click Proceed to PayPal. Just before the proceed button, you should see a dialog box telling you Sandbox is enabled.

Upon clicking the proceed button, you would be redirected to the sandbox account. Log in with the sandbox buyer email and password you had earlier created.

On the next page, accept terms and conditions. Finally, click Pay Now

That’s it! To be sure the order went through, log into your website, go to WooCommerce >> Orders. You should see the order you just processed.

Now we have tested and verified that our WooCommerce/PayPal setup is working properly, we can now disable PayPal Sandbox. By so doing real users will be able to purchase from your store.

1. Set Up a Stripe Account

2. Install and Activate the WooCommerce Stripe Payment Plugin

Once you have a Stripe account ready, the next step is to install and activate the WooCommerce Stripe plugin before you can enable Apple Pay.

For this, log in to your WordPress dashboard, and then navigate to Plugins >> Add New. Locate the search bar at the top right and type ‘WooCommerce Stripe’.

Next, the plugin should appear on the search results. Make sure you see ‘by WooCommerce’ under the plugin. Click on Install Now next to the plugin name and then activate the payment plugin once the installation completes.

3. Integrate Your Store With Stripe

To start, let’s show you how to enable Stripe payment gateway by connecting Stripe to your WooCommerce store.

For this, go to WooCommerce >> Settings, and then select the Payments tab.

After that, scroll down and locate the Stripe – Credit Card (Stripe) option, and then toggle it to the on position. Click Finish Set Up to continue the configuration process.

Next, click on Enter account keys to enter your API keys. An overlay will appear for you to enter your API keys.

You can get this set of keys from your Stripe Dashboard. Leave this tab open and log in to your Stripe account.

From your developer dashboard, click on API keys. You’ll see a set of API keys (publishable and secret). You will use these keys to complete your WooCommerce connections to Stripe.

Next, you’ll need to set up webhooks on your Stripe account. To start, copy the webhook link and proceed to your Stripe dashboard.

Adding Webhooks

Webhooks help to keep a log of events in your applications. These events include payments, disputes, orders, etc.

To complete your Apple Pay on WooCommerce integration, you’ll need to add the webhook link to your Stripe account and select events to be monitored.

Repeat the same process to add other endpoints to your Stripe account.

Your webhook is now configured on Stripe and ready to listen to events. You can view information about all events in your application from the Webhooks menu.

Now, you’ll need to copy your webhook Signing secret and add it to your WooCommerce Stripe settings.

To copy your webhook signing secrets, click on Webhooks from your developer dashboard and then click on the webhook URL you added earlier.

After that, click Reveal under Signing secret to reveal the signing key, and then copy it.

After you’ve copied the signing key from Stripe, head back to your WordPress dashboard, then go to WooCommerce >> Settings. Then select the Payments tab and click on Edit account keys.

Next, enter the secret signing keys you copied from your Stripe account into the Test Webhook Secret field and click on Save test keys.

4. Enable Apple Pay

Your store is now ready to accept payments through the Stripe Apple Pay gateway. However, you will need to specifically enable the Apple Pay option for the button to show on your checkout pages.

To do that, return to your WooCommerce Dashboard and navigate to Settings >> Payments. After that, tick the Apple Pay / Google Pay checkbox to activate and enable the Apple Pay payment method. Finally, click on Save changes to confirm.

Note: This would also enable the Google Pay option for users with Android devices.

5. Make a Test Payment

Now that you’ve successfully added the Apple Pay button to your WooCommerce store, the next thing is to test your integration.

To make a test payment, log in to your store using an Apple device (or a Safari browser if you don’t own an Apple device) and try to make an order. You should see the Apple Pay button on your online payment checkout form with the Apple logo on the page. Click on it to initiate payment.

Note: Stripe test credit card doesn’t work with Apple Pay integration. This means you’ll need to complete the payment using your real card details. However, if you’re using test API keys, Stripe will automatically issue a refund after completing the test payment.

6. Enable Live Mode

Once your test payment is successful, you can return to your Stripe dashboard and disable test mode. This should automatically enable Live Payments on your store.

Are your WooCommerce email notifications not sending? This common issue can disrupt order communications with customers. In this guide, we’ll explore the typical causes of this problem and provide step-by-step solutions to ensure your WooCommerce store sends emails reliably.

In other cases, the site owner may be the one not getting notifications, or WooCommerce may not be sending email notifications at all.

I understand how frustrating this can be, so in this article, I will be walking you through the common problems that prevent your WooCommerce Plugin from sending emails, and how to resolve them.

There are quite a few causes of this problem. Some can be resolved very easily, others take a few more steps.

We will start with the easy steps. If these steps fix your issue, great, less reading for you.

Common Solutions for Email Notification Problems

  1. Check your WooCommerce Email setup
  2. Check if your emails are going to Spam Folder
  3. Use an email with a different domain as your recipient address
  4. Use an SMTP Plugin

Let’s take these steps one after the other.

Check your WooCommerce Email setup

When dealing with WooCommerce Email settings, the two major things you need to check are “Email sender options” and “Individual notification emails”.

To check for errors in your email sender settings:

Login to your WordPress Dashboard.
Place your mouse pointer over “WooCommerce” on the main menu and select “Settings”.

Click on the “Emails” tab.

Scroll down to see “Email Sender Options”. Next, ensure the “From” name and “From” address are properly set up.

From Name: Specifies the name you want people to see when they receive your email.
When setting up “From” name, do not use special characters such as “@/.&-”. Only use letters like “Fix Runner” as used in the picture above. If you currently use something like yourname@BusinessName, this could be the reason why your emails are not getting sent.

From Address: Check to see that your sender email address is correctly entered. If there are errors, make corrections. Finally, scroll down and click Save Changes. Next, you want to make sure that you have set up your notification emails correctly.

The list of all notification emails can be seen in your emails tab (WooCommerce > Settings > Email).
Click on the email you are having problems with.

Check to see if the email is enabled. If it is not, enable it.
Next, check the recipient email address and ensure it is entered correctly.

Scroll down and click Save Changes. Now perform a test to see if you have sent the email out correctly.

Check if your emails are going to Spam Folder

Your WooCommerce email notifications may not be getting into people’s inboxes because they are going to Spam. If that’s the case, then it is likely because your web host IP address is blacklisted as a result of spamming by other users on the same IP.

To resolve this, you would need to contact your web host, explain the problem to them and try to see if they can fix it.

Use an email with a different domain as your recipient address

For example, sender email is example@fixrunner.com and recipient is person@fixrunner.com. Both emails are on the fixrunner.com domain.

The easiest solution for this is to use an email with a different domain as your recipient email.

To enable eCommerce tracking in WordPress, you need to install the eCommerce addon by MonsterInsights. For this, go to Insights >> Addons and click Install next to the eCommerce addon.

After enabling enhanced eCommerce tracking, head back to your WordPress admin dashboard. Then go to Insights >> Settings to access the MonsterInsights settings.

MonsterInsights will automatically detect the eCommerce plugin you’re using. Toggle on the Use Enhanced eCommerce option if you’d like to view advanced tracking reports. Be sure to click Save Changes after making your changes.

Universal Analytics

On your Google Analytics dashboard, go to Conversions >> Ecommerce to view your store’s performance.

Next, select the Overview sidebar menu. This would open up a broad overview of your website performance.
